A dissertation fully deserving a Doctorate of Arts

"Based on a true story."

Understanding this is key to fully appreciating the joy, soul and craftsmanship that went into creating this gem.

The film works as a stand alone piece in itself - the teenagers I watched it with gave it an average rating of 7.5 - covering the full spectrum of types of comedy from slapstick to satire.

Being of a similar age to Harry, I was exposed to the same kind of visual entertainment as a child in 70's Britain. So, in addition to the wonderfully surreal world that this genius envelopes himself in, I was able to cherish the the way he weaved in references drawn from a wide range of cultural tropes such as the Children's Film Foundation, American cartoons, black and white adventure films shown on afternoon t.v., The Goodies, pantomime, and public information films amongst others.

Overall, a fantastical masterpiece richly deserving the honour bestowed on him by the University of Kent.

The secret of the green ooze

Doctor Harry Hill brings his madcap humour to the big screen and he manages to rope in Matt Lucas, Julie Walters, Johnny Vegas, Sheridan Smith, Simon Bird and Jim Broadbent where he embarks on a road trip to Blackpool with his Nan when he discovers that his pet hamster, Abu Hamster who is oozing green stuff only has one week to live. However this is only a scheme hatched by his long lost twin and a pair of henchmen.

Trouble is Hill ends up in Blackpole where he spends a night in a guest house run by the Magic Numbers and takes a guided tour of a nuclear power plant by a cleaner (Oscar winner Jim Broadbent in drag!)

The film contains sniper chicken useful for a midweek dinner, radioactive hamsters, a dog Jackson 5 tribute, the Dachshund 5, shell people, a fox that is a master of disguise and Blackpool.

Its a madcap, surreal, silly mayhem. The film rather lulls in the middle when you feel its run out of steam and laughs. The humour is a bit hit and miss, however switch your brain off, watch it with the kids and it is mildly entertaining and amusing.

Has a couple of bright spots, but it's pretty much laughter-free for the most part

Harry is living at home with his Nan (Julie Walters) - although he wishes that she would move out. When Harry discovers that his hamster Abu (voiced by Johnny Vegas) is ill and when he's told that Abu only has 7 days to live, he sets off on a road trip to Blackpool. However, Harry is unaware that his evil twin brother Otto (Matt Lucas) is plotting to kidnap Abu so that he can have Abu as a centre piece for his plastination creation. Otto's henchman Ed (Simon Bird) and Kisko (Guillaume Delauney) are tasked with kidnapping the hamster and bringing him to Otto.

The opening scene where Harry is racing his nan on her scooter was quite amusing, but sadly it really falls apart after that. The plot is stupid in this film, but I expected it to be stupid, but what it forgets to be is funny. The whole plot revolves around Ed and Kisko trying to capture Abu and the best that Hill & Co can come up with is to have the kidnappers dress up in an array of outfits to try to fool Harry, Nan & Abu - it's funny once, but it quickly wears thin and it shows a complete lack of imagination. The worst part in this film was probably the Justin Bieber/Selena Gomez scene which was just 'cringeworthy bad' and totally unfunny. A lot of the set-pieces were both stupid and unfunny (the traffic cone scene being a notable low point).

Even though the material was pretty shoddy, most of the cast were at least game with the likes of Bird, Walters, Lucas & Broadbent certainly being much better than the material that they've been given. The music numbers also brought the film to life and were quite fun. The only parts of the film that I thought were particularly good were the scenes where Harry addressed the audience and gave some of his 'consumer advice'. It was a nice-touch as not only was it quite clever, but it's also educational in an amusing way. It's just a shame that the rest of the film was so bad.

I was quite surprised when watching this film that it only had a PG Rating - even though it's a comedy film it does have quite a dark plot and there is actually some violence and some other potentially disturbing scenes. Therefore if you insist on watching it then it's probably best not to watch it with young children (although it's probably best just not to watch it at all).

Given the fact that Hill came up with the idea for this film I expected more; I didn't expect it to be as good as TV Burp, but I expected it to be reasonably close to being as funny, but alas it wasn't to be. As a whole, it generally lacked imagination, was largely unfunny, and quickly grew tiresome. If you're a fan of Hill then by all means give it a try, but if you do decide to watch it then be prepared to be disappointed.
